The Golden Globes on January 5 will award the best in TV and film, driving a regular surge in interest and viewing in nominees and winners.
The Context
Award shows have a reputation for driving up interest in nominees and winners, which even just ten years ago would have led to a rerelease around the end of January as studios continued to campaign between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
However, streaming platforms now dominate as the primary form of media consumption for most of the cinema-curious: Wickedthe phenomenon film based on a powerhouse Broadway musical, released on November 27 and is already available to rent on streaming platforms.

Where and how to watch these films and TV shows is not as straightforward as it might have been when Netflix was the main platform. A mosaic of streaming platforms now dazzle users, with each TV network and movie studio trying to hold onto their piece of the digital pie.

Netflix has hit its usual plaudits with the new season of Squid Game, along with a new season of The Diplomatand some fresh blood with the Kristen Bell-led Nobody Wants Thisthe Guy Ritchie spin-off The Gentlemenblack comedy Baby Reindeer, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Ripleythe Kiera Knightly thriller Black DovesTed Danson’s new comedy series A Man on the Inside and Sofia Vergara’s Griselda.
Maxthe streaming platform for HBO, also hosts a host of heavy hitters in a big year for the channel and platform: The studio will hope to see returning dividends on past winners such as Hackswhich recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Jean Smart’s leading performance, and House of the Dragonthe platform will have high hopes for newcomer The Penguin, True Detective: Night Country andKate Winslet’s The Regime.
All shows on Max are also available on platforms that allow the Max premium add-on, which includes Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling TV, Prime Video, The Roku Channel and Fandango at Home.
Apple TV brings a strong showing this year, led off by Gary Oldman’s Slow Horsesalong with Jason Segel’s Shrinking – also starring Harrison Ford – and Disclaimer,starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen. David E. Kelley has another legal drama winner with Presume Innocentstarring Jake Gyllenhaal, also available on the platform.
Apple TV shows can also be watched on Amazon Prime Video with the premium add-on.
Amazon Prime Video itself, however, had a slim outing this year, with only the Donald Glover-created Mr. & Mrs. Smith – starring Glover and Maya Erskine.
Hulu looks to expand on the already impressive trophy haul for Shogun, The Bear and Only Murders In The Building. The platform, known mainly for streaming the most recent seasons of actively-airing TV shows, will also look for some plaudits for Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.
Shows available on Hulu are also available on other platforms for purchase, such as Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
Disney+ is also home to The Bear, but it will look to snag a Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedywin for lead actress Katheryn Hahn in Agatha All Along.
Network TV powerhouse Abbott Elementary is available on Hulu and Max with regular subscriptions, as well as premium subscriptions on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, YouTube TV, Sling TV, The Roku Channel and Disney+, as well as for purchase on Fandago at Home and Apple TV.
Paramount+ has two entries in this year’s Golden Globes with acting nods for Kathy Bates in the Matlock reboot, which also airs on CBS, and Billy Bob Thorton in Landmanthe latest series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.
Rounding out the list, Peacockthe streaming platform for NBC, has best series and best actor nods for The Day of the Jackal.
